Technical Specs
  • Made for commercial spring applications but able to fit into residential winding cones (need 3.5” clearance between shaft and wall).
  • Winds a commercial spring with up to 175 ft-lbs of torque.  As a point of reference, a .437" wire x 6.0"ID x 48"long spring (IPPT = 148) with 14 turns requires 2,077 in-lbs or 173 ft-lbs of torque. Two of these springs can lift a 1,500 pound door.  Brutewinder torque limit is 2,100 inch-pounds of torque.
  • Use a drill such as the corded DeWalt DWD460K 1/2" VSR Stud and Joist drill with E-clutch anti-lock control (two speed 330 rpm, 1200 rpm). Or if you want cordless, use the Cordless Milwaukee M-18 Fuel Super Hole Hawg 2809.
  • 10 turns in less than a minute w/1,000 RPM drill
  • Needs 3.5 inch clearance from shaft to wall
  • Can be used on up to 7.5 inch spring diameters, and can accomodate both 1.0 and 1.25 diameter shafts.
  • Can be wound at 2,500 RPM
  • Weighs 11 lbs
  • Made from Stainless steel and high temper bronze for wear resistance.

Awesome product!!

"This thing is awesome, it gets in places and operates at speeds winding bars just can’t. All I can say after 20 years in the field is WOW just WOW!! Where has this thing been all my life. 100% satisfied with my purchase"

Great Product

"Excellent craftsmanship and will help out our techs a ton!"

Chris N. (5/5)

It just makes sense.

"I am all about keeping manual labor as manual labor. But this tool allows you to work smarter and harder. The ease of using this tool to put torsion on or off a spring will make it hard to go back to using bars. Tore my rotator cuff in middle of an 18 door job (all high lift) with 6" and 7-1/4" springs and currently having no trouble putting torsion on the springs. This tool might just be my best tool purchase in a long time, I have slight regrets for waiting so long to make the purchase. Thanks Surewinder."

Comercial work

"Did my 1st commercial door with that thing and it's amazing got the correct amount of turns with Eze. Definitely need some red grease high temp for sure though."

Great Product, Even Better Company

"Shipping was prompt and everything was packaged very well. The Brutewinder performs flawlessly and maintaining the equipment is easy and straightforward. Even better than the product is their customer service. I ordered the grease gun along with the Brutewinder which happened to be backordered. The company president immediately sent an email confirming the purchase and apologizing for the inconvenience. It was sent out very quickly without issues. I recommend this product and company to anyone in the garage door industry."

"The surewinder and brutewinder are great tools. This will be our 3rd surewinder and 2nd brutewinder that we have purchased. Great product and great addition to assisting with winding springs. The previous tools are still working as they should, these are added as our crew is growing. Would recommend the tool to anyone in the garage door business!"

Q&A

Can you get parts for the brute if so nuts are starting to strip would like to replace that assembly
Yes, we sell drive bolt replacement kits. Send email to chris@surewinder.com
Will this wind a triplex spring
If the IPPTx Number of turns summed up for each of the 3 springs is less than 2,100 (which is the Brutewinder torque limit exressed in inch-pounds), yes, it can do it
Hello, Is it possible to purchase this tool, for delivery to 2600, rue de Celles, porte 19, Québec, Qc, G2C 1R1. I see that you can pay by Paypal, could you send me a link? THANKS
Yes we can ship to you in Quebec. Please order at: https://www.surewinder.com/brutewinder-shop
Will it work on single spring operator whiting trailer door?
No. We are working on a new product we call the Freightwinder that is much smaller that will fit into the tight space of a truck trailer. Send an email to chris@surewinder.com and we can discuss
Can I order parts ?
We can sell any part to fix a problem. Or we can repair a damaged unit within 1-2 weeks.
Will this work on 7-5/8" ID springs?
Yes it will
Can you suggest a DeWalt cordless unit to run this?
Joe We recommend these for our tools: 1. Surewinder - Milwaukee 2804 2. Brutewinder - Milwaukee 2809 Cheers Chris
We are both residential and commercial. Can the commercial model also wind 1-3/4 - 2" ID springs ?
The Brutewinder will fit into the smallest residential winding cone, but because it has a larger diameter (gear ratio) you must have 3.5" from edge of shaft to the wall
Can this also wind a small 8x7 door’s spring? Or only bigger ones
The Brutewinder can fit onto the smallest residential winding cone, but because it has a larger gear ratio, the diameter is larger and hence you will need 3.5 inches from the edge of the shaft to the wall.
How do i get replacement parts. Need worm gear setup
Please send me an email with photos of what is wrong to chris@surewinder.com
The pens that go into the winding cone, are they good for 1/2", 5/8" & 3/4" holes?
Yes, the drive pins will work for all those size winding cone holes. Chris
Will wind 6" duplex springs? (.393 x 6" & .306x 3")
You didn't list the length of the spring or the number of turns, but I am pretty sure it can. If you email this information to me I can run the numbers. chris@surewinder.com
What should we be doing to service and maintain these. Our crews lube them religiously. Would it be a good idea to soak them in a parts washer?
The primary periodic maintenance items are: 1. keep greased 2. make sure thumb latch "clicks" into place by adjusting set screws on opposite side of bronze worm wheel. 3. Check that fasteners are tightened. It would be a good idea to take apart the tool and degrease / clean the inner workings to remove dirt and debris once a year.
my shaft line is 12" off the wall, The construction is insulated panels. Whats the solution
If you are using a lift , the rail of the lift would be used to react the load.
